Broadcom to Sell WAPI-enabled IC Products in China
November 27, 2009
US-based Broadcom announced on November 20 that the vast majority of its WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) IC products will support China's homegrown wireless technology, called WAPI (Wireless Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure) security standard, with an aim to boost its market presence in China, according to a press release by Broadcom on November 20. These WLAN IC solutions will be used for home networking products and mobile devices. It is learnt that Wi-Fi iPhones will have to support WAPI in order to obtain network access licenses from China's MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology).

Meanwhile, Broadcom's WAPI-enabled IC products have been certified for use on China's GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) and TD-SCDMA (Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) networks and are compatible with Windows Mobile and Android OS, according again to the same source.
